The “no-wash” trend is making the summer rounds — is there something to it?
Every summer, without fail, the ‘no-shampoo’ trend seems to make its rounds. On some level we get it; summer days in the sun, swimming in lakes, and saltwater do one of two things — dry hair out or add that coveted ‘beachy volume’. Either scenario can have you pausing before reaching for the shampoo bottle.
But there’s another insidious idea that seems to tag along with all that summer texture; that the detergents themselves could be causing hair to thin.
Is there something to it?
Can skipping the shampoo really protect your strands?

Why Skipping Shampoo Can Make Hair Feel Thicker…. Temporarily
On the surface, there’s a logic trail to follow as to why this concept feels so true, especially if you happen to have fine hair. The hair follicles in our scalp secretes sebum, which can increase in the summer months. Increased sweat from the heat can add to this. As this sebum builds up, and depending on your hair type, thickness, and other summer activities (such as swimming), after a few busy days of the cottage (or camping, travel, road trips — take your pick!), the greasiness can dissipate and your hair feels… fuller, thicker, and more textured.
That’s because sebum that builds up on your hair doesn’t come off well without shampoo. Water removes some, but not all of it.
And for those of us with dry hair? Infrequent washes can make hair feel moisturized, less frizzed.
Does Shampoo Cause Fallout?
Insidiously, when you do finally run the shampoo through your hair after some skipped shampoos, there can seem to be a lot more hair in the drain… making it feel like the shampoo is causing the fallout.
It’s not. Though the two can seem to coincide, you’re actually seeing shed hair built up over days.
Truth: Our Hair is Shedding All the Time
Whether you shampoo or not, your hair is shedding every day, anywhere between 50 and 100 strands. It’s a normal part of the growth cycle: hair grows, rests, sheds, and a new strand begins the cycle over again.
The trick is that we tend to see shed strands most when we shampoo and shower, and it can become more noticeable when we clean our hair less. When our hair is clean, the strands tend to fallout with daily activity, because there’s no friction. When products, dead skin, and oil build up over a week, it can act as a type of glue throughout the day, keeping strands tangled in place until you shower.
It can make it seem as if shampoo is the culprit, when it’s the lack of frequent cleaning leading to a shedding delay.

Clean Hair, Healthy Scalp?
Even if you like the added volume, moisture, or texture that comes with fewer shampoos, there’s a trade-off. While oils can add volume, they — along with dead skin, sweat, and products — also build up on the scalp.
That residue can clog hair follicles, cause inflammation and irritation (hello itch and scalp acne), creating an environment that’s worse for healthy hair growth, not better. Folliculitis (an infection of the hair follicle that looks and feels like a bad pimple) can lead to temporary bald patches if it’s left untreated. If you have dandruff? Not shampooing can leave the yeast that causes it to over proliferate, leading to more inflammation.
The scalp has to work harder when it’s not cleaned regularly, and that’s not conducive to your healthiest hair.
How to Build a Routine That Works for You
You don’t need to shampoo every day, nor is once-a-week appropriate for everyone. Instead of obsessing over a regimented number of washes, shampoo on a schedule that suits your scalp type. For example, oily scalps often do better washed more frequently; dry scalps can tolerate longer stretches. Always use a gentle, sulfate-conscious cleanser that won't strip or irritate. Be gentle when detangling wet, clean hair, which can be more fragile, and support the follicle itself with thoughtfully curated products that can deliver truly helpful anti-inflammatory ingredients so your scalp can concentrate on doing its job, not combatting build-up, inflammation, and irritation.
And if reducing shedding is your ultimate goal? A great duo, like the Feel Confident Shampoo and Conditioner, can help.
