Are We Destined by Our Genes to Have Thin Hair?

Roughly 50% of all humans will experience some form of hair loss in their lifetime. Should you blame all of it on your family tree?

Genetics shares the lion’s share of the responsibility for thinning hair, but they don't always act alone. Photo by Amr Taha™ on Unsplash

Genetics is a Main Player…But It's Not the Whole Story

Anyone who tries to tell you hair thinning isn’t genetic is probably trying to sell you something. Genetics absolutely play a role, particularly where the most common form of hair loss, androgenetic alopecia, is concerned.

Androgenetic alopecia (the technical term for patterned hair loss) is hereditary, but it’s not due to a single gene or chromosome like we once thought, making it trickier to predict (no, your mom’s brother’s hair loss pattern is not a definitive predictor of your hair).

Genetics predict how sensitive your hair follicles will be to dihydrotestosterone, the metabolite of DHT responsible for hair follicle miniaturization. If thinning runs in your family? You might be more predisposed to experiencing thinning.

But treating genetics as the only explanation that hair isn’t looking as lustrous as we might remember is overlooking a long list of mitigating factors.

What Else Contributes to Thinning Hair?

In a word? Stress. A significant physical or emotional stressor can push hair follicles into a resting phase all at once, leading to a temporary (but noticeable) shedding event called telogen effluvium. The catch is it often only shows up two to three months after the stressor itself (like a winter flu), making it hard to link.

Hormonal shifts are another tricky and complicated factor. Pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, menopause, and thyroid imbalances can all disrupt the hair growth cycle, independent of your genetics or compounding.

Many women during menopause first notice thinning at the temples that they hadn’t experienced before. The drop in estrogen is the cause, but it’s often uncovering a very modest DHT sensitivity (genetics) at the temples that hormones previously hid

Nutritional gaps are uncommon in our modern diet but do happen. Low iron, insufficient protein intake, and deficiencies in biotin or other key nutrients can all show up in your hair, since hair follicles are metabolically demanding. Some medications, from blood thinners to some antidepressants, list hair thinning as a potential side effect.

Your hair care habits can play a surprising role in hair loss. Tight hairstyles, color treatment, bleaching, and excessive heat styling can all put cumulative stress on the hair follicle and weaken the hair shaft over time. Scalp health also plays an important role. Chronic dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and other inflammatory scalp conditions can disrupt the environment needed for healthy hair growth. Even persistent itching, flaking, or inflammation may contribute to increased shedding if left untreated.

Altogether, how our scalp feels and is treated can compound the appearance of thinness even when genetics aren't the primary driver.

And let’s not forget time. Even without a genetic predisposition, hair naturally becomes finer and less dense as we age. Follicle activity slows down for virtually everyone eventually.

So What Can Be Done?

Getting a diagnosis if you suspect you have thinning hair is one of the best first steps you can take. There are safe, incredibly effective medical hair loss therapies available through prescription.

Feel Confident has partnered with a third party telemedicine provider to connect eligible individuals with healthcare providers who can evaluate their hair loss concerns and determine whether prescription hair loss therapy might be appropriate.

While genetic thinning tends to follow predictable patterns (a widening part, a receding hairline, thinning at the crown), non-genetic causes often show up as more diffuse, all-over shedding or come on more suddenly. If your thinning doesn't fit the classic genetic pattern, or came on quickly, it's worth digging deeper. Bloodwork and a conversation with your doctor or dermatologist can rule out or help narrow things down.

Supporting the Hair Follicle at Home

Whether your thinning is genetic, stress-related, hormonal, or a combination, supporting the health of the follicle is something you can do at home. That means prioritizing scalp circulation, reducing inflammation, and giving your follicles the nutrients and signals they need to stay in an active growth phase for longer to improve density and thickness.

This is exactly where targeted ingredients like saw palmetto, pumpkin seed oil, curcumin, and caffeine come in. While you can find the beneficial ingredients listed above individually in many thickening haircare products out there, Dr. Gary Linkov’s Feel Confident signature ROOTDefense® blend includes all four: saw palmetto, pumpkin seed oil, curcumin, and caffeine. 30 plus years of organic chemistry experience went into developing these products to give you hair the best at home boost possible.

Clinically validated to reduce hair shedding, increase hair density through increased diameter, and support healthier-looking, stronger hair. A 12-week clinical and consumer perception study found that 88% of participants reported stronger, more resilient hair, while 91% reported improved overall hair health after using Feel Confident Shampoo and Conditioner

Love the new packaging especially that it now comes in a box. I have thin hair at my temples and this foam gives me volume in those areas without feeling too crunchy or artificial like gel or mousse sometimes can. Good and interesting product.

This is an amazing duo that literally saved my hair. It was badly shedding after a chemical over-processing. I was afraid to loose my long hair completely, none of the products I tried worked. Dr. Gary suggested using his Feel Confident Shampoo and Conditioner. There was a noticeable improvement within two weeks. Shedding completely stopped within a month. I will continue using these products to maintain healthy long hair.

I've been using the shampoo for several months now, and I love it! This is the best hairloss shampoo I've seen, and I think using it in the morning helps me wake up further still. I think the old bottle was fine, but the new one looks fancier (and holds more shampoo). Really great stuff!

I can’t tell you how long I’ve searched for a reliable shampoo and conditioner set. I’ve tried everything and spent so much money on experimenting. I’m so happy with the feel confident line. My hair feels great, it styles great, and it does really really good things for my curls. 10/10 would recommend!

Was very excited to see Dr. Gary come out with a scalp serum. I love that this serum comes in a box. The box and bottle both have a luxurious feel. I have only been using for about a month mostly at my temples. Something about this serum just makes my scalp feel refreshed and makes me feel good that I am taking care of myself. 4 stars only because I want to see what happens after another month of use - will hopefully be updating my review to 5 stars if there is any improvement at the temples!
